Grinder is a UNIX server located on campus that is capable of processing functions and printing to a large-scale Designjet 4000PS printer/plotter. Currently, it is used as a print spooler.

Grinder is located at grinder.ucs.uri.edu.

to access the grinder enter TELNET://grinder.ucs.uri.edu into a web browser, or into command prompt

Grinder Accounts

Faculty, Staff and Students may apply for a Grinder Account. The server space allowed is roughly 20 MB for Faculty/Staff and 10MB for Students.

How to apply:

  • Download Handout 72, UNIX (AIX): Grinder Computer Account Application.
  • Fill out the form and submit it at the Tyler Hall Dispatch Counter, the Help Desk, or via fax to 874-7171. You will be notified when your account has been created.
  • Your userid will match your e-Campus UserID . If you do not have an eCampus username, fill out an ETAL account application first.

Once you have a grinder account, and changed the initial password via TELNET, you can then begin to download and upload files to it.

Macintosh Access

To access grinder from a Macintosh computer open a web browser such as Safari or Firefox and type TELNET://grinder.ucs.uri.edu into the address bar. This will open up a terminal where you can put in your username and password for grinder. Once you log in for the first time you will be prompted to change your password
Then use a client such as FileZilla to upload and download files to your account. Use grinder.ucs.uri.edu as the host name and use your grinder credentials for the username and password. Leave the port number blank.

Windows Access

To access grinder from a Windows machine determine if your computer is running Windows XP, Vista, or 7.

If your computer is running Windows XP go to the Command Prompt and type:

  • TELNET grinder.ucs.uri.edu

From there you will be able to enter your username and password. Once you have successfully logged in you will be prompted to change your password.

If your computer is running Windows Vista or Windows 7 open the Control Panel and go to Programs and Features. From there click "Turn Windows Features On and Off". When the list of Windows features populates scroll to Telnet Client and make sure that the check box next to it is selected. Once that is done go to the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run As Administrator. Then type:

  • TELNET grinder.ucs.uri.edu

From there you will be able to enter your username and password. Once you have successfully logged in you will be prompted to change your password.


After you have done the TELNET proceedure use a program such as FileZilla that will allow you to FTP to and from the server. Type grinder.ucs.uri.edu as the host name, and use for grinder information for the username and password. Once you log in through that program you will be able to move files to and from the server.

NOTE: You are required to telnet and log on to your account at least once to be able to ftp to the account.

Creating Plotter Friendly Files

The graphics files must either Postscript, HP-GL/2 or HP RTL (Raster Transfer Language) files.

  1. Download a driver for the printer (Designjet 4000PS) from HP and set it up as a printer on your machine.
  2. Select the "Print to File" port during the Wizard setup.
  3. When printing from the application, select the HP printer and check the box "Print to File".
  4. You can scale the image to the paper size of your choice under the "Page Setup" scaling option.
  5. Name the file as prompted and save it on your harddrive.
  6. FTP the file to Grinder.

Printing to the Color Plotter in Tyler

Once connected to grinder, enter the following into the command prompt:

  • lpr -P plot1 graphic_file_name

To check the status of the file, enter the following into the command prompt:

  • lpq -P plot1

Note: Plotter output can be picked up at the Dispatch Counter in the lobby of Tyler Hall.
